ELIZA

E liza’s head throbbed terribly. Though she was conscious, the repeated blows to the head had resulted in severe dizziness. As she was dragged further from the car, the lack of natural light made any kind of focus difficult. Even when Josh had all but slapped her, his visage was multiplied, his face swimming in a kaleidoscope of double and triple vision.

Now she was just dead weight, being dragged to her demise by a despicable man and his psychopathic friend.

Why had she left the house? She should have just said no to Catherine. At least they would have both been safe.

But Eliza knew deep down that was not true. Josh had admitted to grooming Catherine from the moment of their meeting. What had he said? It was only meant to be Catherine? Their “chance” encounter was planned, not happenstance. And then Lee decided to include her too, just to add salt to the proverbial wound.

Eliza had to laugh, though the noise came out as a low snort that warranted no reaction from her kidnappers. Only in a scenario as fucked as this would something as abhorrent as attempted rape garner additional, excitable attention.

She did, however, have one advantage over last time: she was not drugged. Both body and mind were at her disposal and unhindered by sedatives.

She tried to focus on the car as it began to disappear behind the crest of the hill. If she could just concentrate, her vision would stop swimming. Though she allowed herself to be dragged, she willed her strength back, flexing the muscles in her legs, her abdomen, her arms, repeating the process like a wave up and down her body as the dusty and jagged ground scratched beneath her.

“Drop her,” said Lee.

Josh obliged and let her go. Though her head was only inches from the ground, its impact with the dirt was enough for her to see more stars. Eliza lay on her back, coughing as she inhaled the dust that powdered around her face.

“Jesus,” said Josh.

Eliza looked up and saw him staring at something in the distance. The look of shock on his face was intense.

Lee chuckled. Though she could not see him from where she lay, the menace in that laugh chilled her.

“Quite a sight, isn’t it?” he said.

Josh gulped audibly.

“I think I’m gonna be sick,” he said.

“Let it all out man,” said Lee. “No judgement here.”

Eliza watched as Josh turned from her, walked five paces, and buckled forward. His body heaved. Though it was dark, Eliza heard everything, her own stomach turning as whatever Josh brought up hit the ground with a wet splat.

Eliza turned onto her stomach, needing to know what had caused such a visceral reaction but dreading what she would find.

Lee stood only a few feet away, watching her roll onto her front like a cat toying with its prey.

He was smiling.

Then she noticed the prone form at his feet.

Eliza felt like she was falling.

“Catherine?” she asked.

Behind her, Josh continued to retch.

Eliza scrambled onto all fours and towards the body, her movement cumbersome with fresh dirt puffing in small clouds around her.
